RCBO Consumer Unit Upgrades: One Fault, One Circuit

One of the most common frustrations we hear from homeowners around Tilehurst, Reading and the surrounding villages goes something like this: the kettle trips something, and suddenly the lights, the fridge and the Wi-Fi all go off together. Half the house is dead because of one small fault on one circuit. If that sounds familiar, the culprit is almost certainly the way your consumer unit (fuseboard) shares its safety protection between circuits.

Why does one fault knock out several circuits?

Many consumer units fitted over the last couple of decades use a dual RCD arrangement. An RCD (residual current device) is the safety device that cuts the power when it detects electricity leaking to earth — the sort of fault that could otherwise give someone a shock. It is a genuinely life-saving piece of kit, but in a dual RCD board each RCD watches over a whole bank of circuits at once.

So when a faulty appliance, a damp outdoor socket or a tired immersion heater causes a small earth leakage on just one circuit, the shared RCD trips — and takes every circuit on its bank down with it. Lights, sockets, freezer, boiler: all off, even though only one of them has a problem. It also makes the fault harder to track down, because you cannot immediately tell which circuit caused the trip.

The fix: individual RCBO protection for every circuit

The modern answer is to replace the board with an RCBO consumer unit. An RCBO combines the overload protection of a circuit breaker with its own built-in 30 milliamp RCD — the sensitivity required for protecting people — in a single device, one per circuit.

The practical benefits are immediate:

  • One fault, one circuit. A fault on the outdoor sockets trips only the outdoor sockets. Your freezer stays cold, your lights stay on, and your home office keeps working.
  • Faster fault-finding. The tripped RCBO points straight at the offending circuit, so diagnosing the underlying problem is quicker and cheaper.
  • Full 30mA protection on every circuit — no more sharing one safety device across many circuits, and no unprotected circuits lurking on older boards.
  • Room for modern additions such as surge protection, which current wiring regulations expect in most new boards.

Is it worth it for an older home?

Much of the housing stock in Reading, Caversham and Pangbourne dates from eras when a rewireable fuse box or a basic split-load board was standard. If your board still has wire fuses, or trips regularly and plunges whole floors into darkness, an upgrade is usually well worth it. A consumer unit swap is typically a single day's work, finishing with full testing of every circuit and an electrical installation certificate for your records — useful when you come to sell or remortgage.

It is also a sensible moment to deal with any niggling faults. A circuit that keeps tripping is telling you something, and a new board makes it far easier to pinpoint what.
